Kickboxing Kids in KL

My 11 year old son announced at the start of our new school year that he would like to take up kick-boxing! Despite already having a full enough calendar of activities and sports, I didn’t try to persuade him otherwise, as i thought it would be good for all round fitness, teach him some self-defense, and let’s be honest it’s pretty cool!!

Anyway, that was the easy part! Actually finding a kick-boxing class in KL that catered for kids was not as straight forward as i thought. Secondly, i needed a class close to our home. Luckily I contacted Extreme Kickboxing in Plaza Damas Sri Hartamas and was told to bring my son along and take a look and I have to say both myself and son couldn’t have been happier!

Master Bathi who runs the classes is very friendly and welcoming (as were all the students), which was especially important as my son was easily the youngest there. The class ranged from my son at 11 years to 25. I wondered if this would be daunting for him but Master Bathi praised and encouraged him all the time, even stopping the class at one point so they could all watch how well he was performing the movements! What a great way to engage a child. So, that was it, my son was hooked and desperate to join up. He’s already taken his first belt!

The cost for kick-boxing is RM180 a month and classes are Monday, Wednesday and Friday 6pm-7pm and you can go to as many classes as you want. They also offer Taekwondo classes and I watched in awe at very young children performing intricate moves and best of all wearing black belts!

Gym For Teenagers

My teenage son has been pestering me for a while to find a gym for him! This hasn’t proved as easy in KL as I initially thought, as most gyms don’t open their doors for kids this age (for obvious reasons) and for me cost was a big factor!

Eventually, through a friend, I found Lean Bodies Gym within the Publika shopping mall at Solaris Dutamas and what a find it is! It’s not a very big gym compared to other large commercial gyms, but it has all the equipment and cardio machines you would need.

The above picture doesn’t actually do it justice, this just shows the free weight area!

When I went along with my son to sign up, it was all very easy and hassle free. I filled out the registration form using a computer, they took my sons thumbprint, which he has to use to gain access and best of all I only had to hand over Rm85 for a months membership for students. There is no signup fee or binding contract either. Membership allows unlimited use and believe it or not they are open 24 hours a day for 7 days. I have to renew in the next couple of days, which I would never have remembered, but they sent me a reminder email and I can even pay online. They even have an online facility where you can check how busy the gym is, so as to avoid any crowds! Though at 5pm when my son normally goes, it’s very quiet. Some larger gyms can be daunting places for anyone, let alone a teenager but this is a very welcoming and impressive set-up.

Safety is obviously very important for teenagers when in the gym, as boys especially, tend to want to lift and bench press the largest weigh they can!! To make sure they have correct technique and that they are working out safely, they have a qualified instructor there (only after school hours) . When they join they get a free introductory training session and they are available ongoing for any assistance.

Little League School Holiday Football Camp

My childrens School breaks on Friday 9th November for one week and already I’m thinking how I’m going to fill the time with activities and keep them busy. Of course, I love having them at home, enjoy the lazy lie-ins but like all children they need stimulation.
Thankfully Little League Soccer KL Malaysia have come to all mums rescue with a football Half Term Camp. My children have attended these camps before and they are always well run and great fun for the kids. So if you children are on holiday I would seriously think about checking it out!

World Diabetes Day Walkathon

In order to raise awareness and bring Diabetes into the public spotlight, a 10km run and 5km walk is taking place on Sunday 11th November starting at Merdeka Square. You have to be over 18 to compete in the run but the walkathon is open to all ages and there is even prize money for the first 3 places in each category. I’m sure that could be a great incentive for some
Kids to put on their running shoes and give it a try!

Bootcamp – Fitness for Teens

Now I have to confess that i absolutley love the Achieve Bootcamp workouts that I attend (yes I really do!), so I was delighted when the lovely people behind these sessions decided to open a new weekly session just for Kids aged 12-16! Its 5pm-6pm on Tuesday in Bukit Damansara and is perfect for kids who are wanting to get fitter and stronger and if they play a sport, help them to play at the best level they can. Needless to say I put my two boys names down and they both loved it. It was great to see them try something different and be excited about what they could achieve.

Debbie, who is one of the instructors, summed up the programme below:-

“Our exercises are designed to elicit a broad, inclusive fitness, which can be scaled to suit any participant at any level and for any sport they play.

We don’t aim to teach the kids to become good at any one particular sport, rather we aim to produce in them the physical fitness, strength and power to allow each individual to become better at any and every sport they play.

We aim to improve their:
•Cardiovascular Endurance
•Muscular Endurance
•Strength
•Power
•Speed
•Flexibility
•Agility

We do this through the use of functional movement patterns and exercises where they will be challenged in all planes of movement, doing the things that teens/pre-teens need to do when they’re playing sport. I.e. pushing, pulling, throwing, jumping, running, climbing and rolling.

No two workouts are the same either, so they’ll never get bored and we always have happy smiling kids at the end of our sessions.

We suggest kids come along and try it out”

They also offer Bootcamps for mums too, on Monday, Wednesday & Friday mornings after school drop-off. I can vouch for how great these classes are. It’s a fun, challenging, outdoor exercise session and very social at the same time. Everyone is encouraged to work at their own pace and no two sessions are the same so you never get bored! You just get a little stiff and sore but that’s good right???

They also provide dietary advice, fat loss services, body assessments and in the future are looking to hold residential fitcamps. You can contact them direct on the following numbers

Jonah Jones Rugby Weekend

The weekend is fast approaching and you may be wondering what you could do that may be a little different from the standard outings? Well the answer may lie in a sporting event which will keep the whole family entertained, enable you and your family to socialize and meet new friends and best of all it’s free…yes free!!!!!

The Jonah Jones Rugby 7′s is being held at Royal Selangor Club Bukit Kiara all day on Saturday 22nd September and Sunday 23rd September. This tournament is the longest running rugby sevens event in Asia and this year the organisers are expecting at least 50 teams to be competing. These include Malaysian, foreign and national teams and has five different categories. All my family are rugby mad and have attended the last four tournaments, so we are very excited about what the weekend has on offer. However, you don’t need to be as passionate as we are about the sport to enjoy yourselves. It promises to be a fun filled social weekend for all the family where you can cheer on the teams from the sidelines, enjoy food from a variety of food booths and in true rugby style have a cold beer while soaking up the atmosphere. Children can run around safely and they even have an inflatable to keep younger children entertained. You never know, you may leave with a child who suddenly declares a desire to start playing rugby. You can check out a previous posting on rugby clubs in KL.

The details for the tournament venue are:-
Royal Selangor Club (Bukit Kiara)
Jalan Bukit Kiara Off Jalan Damansara
(E23, Lebuhraya Sprint)
